    All Levels Welcome
    Time - 8 - 9 AM

We will discuss and train using a clicker to positively reinforce behavior. Parlor tricks often involve multiple steps to teach, so the clicker is an optimal tool to mark the moment of the desired behavior. Clicker training is a method that captures the desired behavior by clicking it as it occurs. It is the same method trainers use to train dolphins and whales. During this class we will introduce and condition dogs to the clicker. We will also train behaviors such as “sit-up”, “take a bow”, “act shy”, and several other dog tricks.

There will be 2 rounds of jumps. One will be at 10 o'clock, and one at 12 o'clock. Each dog entered will get 2 jumps off the dock. The better of the two jumps will determine the dog’s division and place in that division. At 2 o'clock we will take the top 6 dogs of each division and have them jump for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in their division. The top three places will receive a ribbon and prizes.

Novice Division: 1 inch to 9 feet 11 inches.
Junior Division: 10 feet to 14 feet 11 inches.
Senior Division: 15 feet to 19 feet 11 inches.
Master Division: 20 feet to 22 feet 11 inches.
Elite Division: 23 feet to 24 feet 11 inches.
Super Elite Division: 25 feet and above.

Three Rivers Dockdog Club members will be present to help organize this competition. A practice with the Three Rivers Dockdog members will take place at 8:00 AM, so show up early and they’ll not only help you work on your jumps, but also run you through the process for the competition.

Misty Pines’ facility will be open and we will have refreshments that can be purchased, so come early or stay late and have some fun in the park or take a nice relaxing walk through the trails. Don’t forget to stop by the grill and grab a hotdog, drink and other concessions to get you through the day. If your dogs need a bath the grooming tubs and soap will be available for you to wash your dog at $10 per bath.

No parking will be permitted along the driveway. All parking will be in the parking lots at the top of the driveway. Each handler will need to sign in, pay and obtain a wrist band at the main office before proceeding to the dock.

Participants and spectators are asked to bring lawn chairs to sit along the hillside, which will provide a spectacular view of the event.

Each round of jumps, at 10:00 and 12:00, will have a 50 dog maximum, so be sure to get your spot soon. Participants will be organized into groups of 10 and each group will be assigned a jump time. Upon arriving at Misty Pines, participants will receive a flyer with each groups jump time, instructions for registration and rules for the event and park.

You may want to skip feeding your dog lunch this day to ensure you have your dog’s full attention. Please sign up and prepay in advance. This class is open to students from all levels of classes.

    Location
At Misty Pines we work towards building solid obedience and behavior throughout any distraction that we may come across. To solidify these behaviors we work through four variables of dog training; Distance, Distraction, Duration, and Location. Location is perhaps one of the most important variables of training a dog to cope with everyday situations such as someone coming to your door or taking your dog to the park on a sunny afternoon. As a general rule, a dog will only work where it has been taught to do so. Therefore, if the only place that you ever practice obedience such as heeling and stays is here in training class or at home in your living room, it is likely that your dog will find it difficult to hold their focus while faced with the unique distractions present in a new location. Keep in mind that when we change a criteria or variable in training, we make a command new again. Remember that you may need to take a step back and teach the sit command with lure and reward techniques the first time in a new location so that the dog learns to “listen” at this new place with unique distractions.

    Recall Class

    Saturday, September 6th, 2014

    All Levels Welcome
    8 - 9 AM
    Cost - $17

Does your dog come running quickly every time you call his name? Or, does he have selective hearing when you say the word come? This specialty class will teach the art of recalls, or coming when called.

If your dog ignores your calls while outside or while in class, or even if your dog has a very strong recall, but you still want extra practice, then this class is for you. Throughout the class we will be offering different techniques, tips, and exercises dealing with strengthening your dog's recall command. Please pre-register.

    Stay Class

    Saturday, July 5th, 2014

    8:00 - 9:00AM
    Cost - $17

We are now offering Stay Class on the first Saturday of even numbered months. If you are interested in developing your dog's 'stay' command to become a more reliable behavior, then this class for you!

We will work on the three most important aspects of the 'stay' command, the 3 D’s - distance, duration, and distraction. Distance training develops your dog's tolerance to the amount of space between you and your dog. Duration refers to the amount of time your dog holds the 'stay'. Distractions are anything that could interrupt the 'stay' behavior. Our class will improve your dog's 'stay' command by exposing them to these variables in a controlled environment. We have a variety of common real world “distractions” available such as: other people/dogs, wheelchairs, bikes, and toys. The class goal is to achieve a reliable 2-3 minute 'sit', a 3 minute 'down', and a 'stand' for examination.

For those who strive for the utmost performance out of themselves and their dogs, we are renewing a focus on completing the 1 Hour, 1 Mile challenge.

If you have trained your current dog on an electronic collar or a remote/pager collar, we recommend enrolling in this class for a tune-up. We will review the five basic obedience behaviors using the e-collar: sit, down, stay, heel and this way/come, as well as all other behaviors for which you are utilizing the collar.

In this All Levels class, we'll incorporate walking (or jogging if that suits you) and options such as arm movements, wide strides/lunges, and stretches.

Best of all is that there is no need to feel self-conscious because just as in a regular training class, everyone will be focusing on their dog. Some of the commands that we will be working on in class will be heel, walk, sit, down, stay and come.

Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes. Bring water and, of course, dog treats.

Class will be indoors and outdoors. Please dress appropriately.

    Pulling, All Levels

    TBA

    8 - 9 AM
    Cost - $17

All levels and all breeds are welcome from the tiniest Yorkie up to the largest St. Bernard, from complete novices to jail-breaking broncos!

This class will teach your dog to pull whatever item you want him to pull. A bike, wagon, sled, you on skates...anything! Don’t worry; teaching your dog to pull won’t undo any previous obedience training. In fact, quite the opposite; if your dog knows not to pull when given a command, telling them it is okay to pull will solidify their understanding.

Be sure to bring a hungry dog with their favorite treats or toy. Also, if any special equipment is wanted, such as in-line skates or a scooter, bring it along. We will provide a harness for the first class and help get your dog fitted. See you there!

Teaching owners and their dogs how to master their retrieves utilizing both negative and positive reinforcement. This class will teach your dog to "fetch," "hold" and "give" consistently.

    Scent Work

Every dog is equipped with an amazing tool: their nose! Olfaction, the act or process of smelling, is a dog’s primary special sense. Dogs have more than 220 million olfactory receptors in their nose, while humans have only 5 million! Teaching dogs to use their nose to identify a target odor offers many benefits.

      WHY SCENT WORK?
    • Dogs of any age, breed, or temperament may participate and excel
    • Owners of any experience level or physical ability may participate
    • Fun, stimulating activity for dogs and owners
    • Can be practiced inside in small areas; great for winter or foul-weather training
    • Practical value in real-life
      EXAMPLES OF TARGET ODORS:
    • Birch, clove, and aniseed oil (used in scent work trials)
    • Deer antlers
    • Illicit drugs
    • Plants or mushrooms
    • The missing sock
    • Favorite toy
    • Your kids

Misty Pines is now offering scent work classes for three levels. Each level will be four weeks long and will meet on Mondays from 6:30-8:00.

    Scent Work - Level 1

    TBA
    6:30p - 8:00p

$99 per working spot; $50 per auditor/spectator spot

    Call 412.364.4122 to register

In level 1, tasks are kept simple and this is the phase where the dogs are taught how to properly search for a scent (treat or toys only are used during this phase) and how to properly cue the handler that the scent has been targeted. Handlers will learn how to teach their dogs to be independent in their searches and not look for cues from the handler. Initially, searches are limited in area and boxes or other containers are used for scent. Over the course of several sessions we will increase the search area, add environmental objects, and change locations within the facility, all the while ensuring that the dog’s desire to hunt or search is triggered and increased. By the end of this level, dogs will be searching on cue and targeting the containers.

    TBA

    Beginning Monday March 10th
    6:30p - 8:00p

$99 per working spot; $50 per auditor/spectator spot

    Call 412.364.4122 to register

In level 2, we will repeat the basics of box/container searches while pairing the search odor (birch, clove, aniseed) with their rewards. By allowing the dogs to find their own reward, dogs do not look to their handler for cues or help in finding the odor or try to please their handler. We want the dogs to trust their noses and believe that the reward will come from the source of the odor. This creates dogs that are highly motivated to pursue the odor. By returning to the basics, the dogs’ focus and drive will remain high because the new scent is paired with the familiar search game. After the basics have been repeated, we will add elevation and begin considering situations that handlers might face in real-world environments, including tempting distractions.

    TBA

    Beginning Monday April 7th
    6:30p - 8:00p

    Call 412.364.4122 to register

In level 3, in general, dogs will learn to conduct their searches just for the odor. They will be searching and targeting odor in interior and exterior environments. We may also begin vehicle searches if participants have excelled to this point in training.

    Yoga With Your Dog

    Next Date is TBA

All Levels, No yoga experience necessary

    Cost - $18 per person

Live like a dog, live in the moment.

Please join us! This class incorporates yoga poses (asanas) with your dog. You will practice traditional poses beside your dog and for an added twist some of the poses will integrate your dog into the action. Any level of strength or flexibility is perfect for this class. Often people think they can't do yoga because they are not flexible or strong enough. However, this is simply false. One of the many benefits of yoga is that truly anyone can do it. If you can breathe you can do yoga! Try it and see!

Dogs are naturals at this practice as they even have a pose in reference to their species, downward facing dog. However, there is more to it than just this pose. The biggest factor is a dog's inherent quality of living in the moment. Rather than worrying about the past or the future they live in the present, a quality that most of us struggle with daily. Attend Yoga With Your Dog and you will work towards experiencing this healthy mindset as well as physical benefits.

What to bring: yoga mat for human, wear comfortable clothing, towel for your dog to lay on, water bottle, bowl for your dog's water.

    Reminders:
    - You will be barefoot during the class
    - Don't worry. It is expected that dogs will be excited but will settle in as the class goes on. To help alleviate some of their excitement please arrive to class 15 minutes early. This will allow for time to let your dog run a bit, meet the other dogs, go to the bathroom and set up your practice space.
    - It is suggested to practice yoga on a light stomach. It is suggested to eat after the class rather than right before for both human and dog.

Class is taught by Aimee Woods Kollinger, Certified Yoga Instructor, Health Coach and owner of Embody Natural Health Juice Cafe + Studio
