Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC) The Canine Good Citizen Test is a titling through the American Kennel Club (AKC) that is designed to recognize dogs that have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test will receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Read this article for more information about the Canine Good Citizen Title and to learn the requirements to achieve it.

Therapy Dog International Test (TDI) The Primary objective of the TDI dog and handler is to provide comfort and companionship by sharing the dog with the patients in hospitals, nursing homes and other institutions and wherever else the Therapy Dog is needed. This is done in a way that increases emotional well being, promotes healing, and improves the quality of life for the people being visited and the staff that cares for these people.

The CGC and TDI also lays the foundation for the Public Access Test for the Misty Pines Certified Service Dogs.

Read this article for more information about the Therapy Dog International Title and learn the requirements to achieve it.

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test - $25

Friday, February 10th | Tests begin at 5:30 PM

The Canine Good Citizen Test is a certification program that is designed to recognize dogs that have good manners at home and in the community. The CGC is a two part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test will receive a frameable certificate from the American Kennel Club. Pre-registration required.

    Clicker Training Class - $25

    101 Class - Saturday, February 18th | 11:15 - 12:00 PM
    102 Class - Saturday, February 25th | 11:15 - 12:00 PM

The clicker is a small springy, snappy metal hand tool utilized in training to reward a desirable behavior immediately with precise timing. It is a secondary reinforcer that signals to the dog that it did the right thing and that a reward will be shortly forthcoming. Clicker training pairs the neutral sound of a clicker with a primary reward, such as a treat. Eventually, the clicker becomes a predictor the reward will soon be given. This allows the trainer to use the sound of the click to reinforce the desired behavior. This is particularly useful when the owner is not in a position to give the food reward immediately.

The syllabus in the clicker 101 class will be learning to charge up the clicker giving it meaning to the dog, how to reward obedience behaviors, and how to touch objects with their mouths and nose on cue. This simple touch behavior leads into retrieving training for the syllabus of clicker 102. Behaviors taught often involve teaching multiple steps and sequences for our dogs to learn the entire behavior, and over time the clicker provides a means of shaping small increments of improvement.

Once the dog reliably performs the desired behavior taught we can start weaning away from the clicker.

101 Requirement: Dog must be food motivated.

102 Requirement: Dog must be food motivated and have completed course 101.

Recommendations: Bring a hungry dog, leash and collar, bait bag and yummy treats. If you do not have a treat bag, they are sold at Misty Pines. You may purchase one before class.

    Customer Appreciation Day

    TBA 2017
    All Day Event

Misty Pines would like to invite everyone to help us celebrate our 41st anniversary by spending the day with us, having lunch, and raising funds for the Ambridge Borough Police Dog Fund. We will have spectacular raffle baskets sponsored by local businesses, a 50/50 raffle, and other donation opportunities that will benefit local police K9s through the Ambridge Borough Police Dog Fund.

While most cities and boroughs will pay for the dog and training, any day-to-day care will usually come out of the handler’s pocket. Even food, safety vests, and health care will not be covered unless the handler provides it. The K-9 community is tight knit, and handlers in different boroughs will often help each other out to provide proper care and tools for their partners. Ambridge Borough has pledged to provide assistance to any K-9 teams in the region that may need it with help from our fundraiser.

Come spend your afternoon with us to see the elite skills of our local police dogs! Ambridge Borough will be organizing a K-9 demo with their handling team at 2:15pm, while the rest of our training schedule will remain the same. The raffle winners will be drawn following the demonstration.

Please come out and join us as we say "Thank You" to all of you who help make Misty Pines such a great place and raise money for a great team that help to keep our community safe.

This class is open to students from all levels of classes.

    Location
At Misty Pines we work towards building solid obedience and behavior throughout any distraction that we may come across. To solidify these behaviors we work through four variables of dog training; Distance, Distraction, Duration, and Location. Location is perhaps one of the most important variables of training a dog to cope with everyday situations such as someone coming to your door or taking your dog to the park on a sunny afternoon. As a general rule, a dog will only work where it has been taught to do so. Therefore, if the only place that you ever practice obedience such as heeling and stays is here in training class or at home in your living room, it is likely that your dog will find it difficult to hold their focus while faced with the unique distractions present in a new location. Keep in mind that when we change a variable in training, we make the cue and behavior unique to that situation. Remember that you may need to take a step back and teach a known behavior with lure and reward techniques the first time in a new location so that the dog learns to execute at this new location with unique distractions.

      The Variables of Training
    • Distance
    • Distraction
    • Durations
    • Location

    Stay Class - $25

    TBA

If you are interested in developing your dog's 'stay' command to become a more reliable behavior, then this class for you!

We will work on the three most important aspects of the 'stay' command, the 3 D’s - distance, duration, and distraction. Distance training develops your dog's tolerance to the amount of space between you and your dog. Duration refers to the amount of time your dog holds the 'stay'. Distractions are anything that could interrupt the 'stay' behavior. Our class will improve your dog's 'stay' command by exposing them to these variables in a controlled environment. We have a variety of common real world “distractions” available such as: other people/dogs, wheelchairs, bikes, and toys. The class goal is to achieve a reliable 2-3 minute 'sit', a 3 minute 'down', and a 'stand' for examination.

Swimming Class, All Levels - $18

    TBA

Does your dog need a swimming lesson? Is your dog a good swimmer but wants to have friends to swim with? We offer a Summer Swimming Class! This helpful class will be sure to get your dog in the water at our dog pond in no time.
