    Location
At Misty Pines we work towards building solid obedience and behavior throughout any distraction that we may come across. To solidify these behaviors we work through four variables of dog training; Distance, Distraction, Duration, and Location. Location is perhaps one of the most important variables of training a dog to cope with everyday situations such as someone coming to your door or taking your dog to the park on a sunny afternoon. As a general rule, a dog will only work where it has been taught to do so. Therefore, if the only place that you ever practice obedience such as heeling and stays is here in training class or at home in your living room, it is likely that your dog will find it difficult to hold their focus while faced with the unique distractions present in a new location. Keep in mind that when we change a criteria or variable in training, we make a command new again. Remember that you may need to take a step back and teach the sit command with lure and reward techniques the first time in a new location so that the dog learns to “listen” at this new place with unique distractions.

    Customer Appreciation Day

    TBA
    All Day Event

Misty Pines would like to invite everyone to help us celebrate our 40th anniversary by spending the day with us, having lunch, and fundraise for the Ambridge Borough Police Dog Fund. We will have spectacular raffle baskets sponsored by local businesses, a 50/50 raffle, and other donation opportunities that will benefit local police K9s through the Ambridge Borough Police Dog Fund.

Tickets for the auctions will be:
    • $2 - 1 ticket
    • $10 - 6 tickets
    • $20 - 13 tickets
    • $5 - each 50/50 ticket

While most cities and boroughs will pay for the dog and training, any day-to-day care will usually come out of the handler’s pocket. Even food, safety vests, and health care will not be covered unless the handler provides it. The K-9 community is tightknit, and handlers in different boroughs will often help each other out to provide proper care and tools for their partners. Ambridge Borough has pledged to provide assistance to any K-9 teams in the region that may need it with help from our fundraiser.

Come spend your afternoon with us to see the elite skills of our local police dogs! Ambridge Borough will be organizing a K-9 demo with their handling team and some local friends at 2:30 pm, while the rest of our training schedule will remain the same. The raffle winners will be drawn following the demonstration. Throughout the entire day we will be giving a 10% discount on any retail items.

Please come out and join us as we say "Thank You" to all of you who help make Misty Pines such a great place and raise money for a great team that help to keep our community safe.

    Scent Work: Intro - $99

    TBA

    Call 412.364.4122 to register

Every dog is equipped with an amazing tool: their nose! Olfaction, the act or process of smelling, is a dog’s primary special sense. Dogs have more than 220 million olfactory receptors in their nose, while humans have only 5 million! Teaching dogs to use their nose to identify a target odor offers many benefits.

      WHY SCENT WORK?
    • Dogs of any age, breed, or temperament may participate and excel
    • Owners of any experience level or physical ability may participate
    • Fun, stimulating activity for dogs and owners
    • Can be practiced inside in small areas; great for winter or foul-weather training
    • Practical value in real-life
      EXAMPLES OF TARGET ODORS:
    • Birch, clove, and aniseed oil (used in scent work trials)
    • Deer antlers
    • Illicit drugs
    • Plants or mushrooms
    • The missing sock
    • Favorite toy
    • Your kids

In level 1 ("Intro"), tasks are kept simple and this is the phase where the dogs are taught how to properly search for a scent (treat or toys only are used during this phase) and how to properly cue the handler that the scent has been targeted. Handlers will learn how to teach their dogs to be independent in their searches and not look for cues from the handler. Initially, searches are limited in area and boxes or other containers are used for scent. Over the course of several sessions we will increase the search area, add environmental objects, and change locations within the facility, all the while ensuring that the dog’s desire to hunt or search is triggered and increased. By the end of this level, dogs will be searching on cue and targeting the containers.

    Scent Work Level 2 - $99

    TBA

    Call 412.364.4122 to register

In level 2, we will repeat the basics of box/container searches while pairing the search odor (birch, clove, aniseed) with their rewards. By allowing the dogs to find their own reward, dogs do not look to their handler for cues or help in finding the odor or try to please their handler. We want the dogs to trust their noses and believe that the reward will come from the source of the odor. This creates dogs that are highly motivated to pursue the odor. By returning to the basics, the dogs’ focus and drive will remain high because the new scent is paired with the familiar search game. After the basics have been repeated, we will add elevation and begin considering situations that handlers might face in real-world environments, including tempting distractions.

**Prerequisite: Dog must be trained to birch.

    Scent Work: Containers - $99

    TBA | 2:30 - 3:30 PM

This 3 week course is dedicated to scent working containers. In competition, dogs odor finding skills are tested in 4 elements: interior, exterior, vehicle and containers. In container searches scent will be hidden exclusively within a container such as a box, suitcase, bucket or backpack. Container searches are great for building confidence in dogs new to scent work as most already associate boxes with rewards.

**Prerequisite: Dogs must have attended an intro scent work course and be trained to find birch oil.

    Call 412.364.4122 to register

    Treadmill Class - $17
