Bird Dog Training
Misty Pines is now making some bird dog training information available online. We are in the beginning stages of putting a collection of articles that Misty Pines has written, as well as select articles from various authors, on our blog. These articles will not enable you to take your dog from start to finish, but they will help you along the way and hopefully offer some guidance, especially for first time bird dog owners. Click here to read our Bird Dog Training Articles. Keep checking back! We are always adding more articles.
We develop bird dogs to their fullest potential by taking the time to know and understand each dog as an individual. It takes hard work, dedication, time and thought to design a unique plan and to train each bird dog. Our training program enhances natural canine abilities and enthusiasm which enables us to achieve positive results consistently. Whether your bird dog is going to be a grouse or pheasant dog, a field champion or an AKC Master Hunter, our goal is to train a finely polished performer that has impeccable manners and social skills.
Each bird dog should learn to boldly reach objectives, point staunchly, and to honor its bracemate on point. They should also learn to be steady to wing and shot, and to promptly and tenderly retrieve to hand. Bird dogs learn to obey all commands and whistle signals readily and willingly. This is when one can truly enjoy and appreciate the presence of a bird dog. The beauty, style, heart and spirit of our companion is what makes a world class bird dog.
Bird dog training is available through private lessons, workshops, classes, and dog boot camp. Please call to set up appointments ahead of time. Reservations are required for private lessons and may not be immediately available.

Reed Foundation for Rescued Gun Dogs
Misty Pines established this foundation to help rescue organizations of the gun sporting dog breeds find successful placements. When Misty Pines receives a candidate, the dog is placed in our dog training program. Through networking, we find the best home for these dogs when they have completed their training program. Gun dogs are perfect for families and as a hunting companion. There is a nominal fee for these family/hunting-trained gun dogs. This fee is directly donated back to the dog shelters and rescue organizations we originally received the dog from.
Master Bird Dog Training
The Master Hunter dogs are finished, seasoned bird dogs that are breathtaking and beautiful to watch work in the fields and forests. These dogs are the product of hard work and total dedication. They are the pride and joy of their owners, trainers and handlers. The Misty Pines Gun Dog Company Masters are no exception.
A Master Hunting Dog must give a polished performance and demonstrate clearly that it deserves to be qualified as such. The master hunting dog is the complete companion that any hunter would be proud of. To pass at the Master level, the dogs must be exceptional the categories listed below.
|
The Master Hunting Dog |
|
Hunting: the dog must show a keen desire to hunt, intelligent use of wind and terrain, and have a bold and attractive manner of running. |
|
Bird Finding Ability: the dog has to show intelligence in seeking objective and an excellent ability to find game. |
|
Pointing: the dog must be intense and staunch. A Master level dog must positively be steady to wing and shot on all birds. |
|
Retrieving: the dog has to deliver the bird promptly, tenderly and absolutely to hand. |
|
Trainability: the dog must be under the handler's control at all times, handled kindly with a minimum of noise and hacking by the handler. |
|
Honoring: the dog must honor its bracemate on point without any restrain, be it physical or verbal. |
The Ruffed Grouse Society
The Ruffed Grouse Society is mainly grouse hunters who, through conservation efforts, are interested in the continuation of the species. Ruffed Grouse Society works with individuals as well as state and local governments to improve land for ruffed grouse, American woodcock and other natural inhabitants that have similar requirements.
Ruffed Grouse Society chapters focus locally to engage members, who are passionate about wildlife, in activities that bring widespread attention to the need for land management, such as banquets and fund raisers.
If you are interested in hunting ruffed grouse and woodcock and are passionate about the conservation of wilderness and "green-land", then please visit the Ruffed Grouse Society web site for more information and a better understanding of what the Ruffed Grouse Society is all about.
A Letter from Jeff
Dear Sportsman,
Misty Pines Dog Park Company has been successfully training dogs for thirty years. We develop bird dogs to their fullest potential by taking the time to know and understand each dog as an individual. It takes hard work, dedication, time and thought to design a unique plan and to train each bird dog. We develop the rapport and trust in our dogs necessary to develop a bird dog that its owner can always be proud of: a companion that truly loves its work and their master.
Our training program enhances natural canine abilities and enthusiasm which enables us to achieve positive results consistently. Whether your bird dog is going to be a hunting buddy, field champion or an AKC Master Hunter, our goal is to train a finely polished performer that you can be proud of. Each bird dog should learn to boldly reach objectives, point staunchly, and to honor a bracemate’s point. They should also learn to be steady to wing and shot, and to promptly and tenderly retrieve to hand. They should consistently obey all commands and whistle signals readily and willingly. Once these goals are achieved, you will truly enjoy and appreciate the work ethic and devotion that it brings to the Master. This is when we can appreciate the beauty, style, heart and spirit of our companion, a first class bird dog.
Our training grounds consist of over 100 acres of woods, fields, and water. We train with live birds; homer pigeons, chukars, and bobwhite quail as our training birds. Birds are an extra cost to the owner when we incorporate them into your dogs training program.
We utilize electronic bird release traps and electronic collars and other state-of-the-art equipment for your dog’s training program.
We are supporters of the wildlife conservation groups such as the Ruffed Grouse Society and hunt wild birds through out the United States. We train for and judge the A.K.C. Hunting Test of Junior, Senior and Master levels.
We train owners and their dogs to achieve these titles. As of this date we successfully have accumulated well over one-hundred AKC titles for our client’s bird dogs success.
We breed the WoodsPoint English Pointers Lines. We have developed these lines over the last twenty years. These are exceptional bird dogs to the finest degree. Our Dogs are guaranteed for loving and friendly temperaments and exceptional hunting abilities. All our dogs are kept in the house, and are companions to our children. Puppies are available by reservation. Litters are limited.
Wishes Sincere
May all your hours be winged with pleasure,
Jeff Woods CPDT
